Your so stupid game show4/1/2023 ![]() Well, I just wanted to say that, you know, it's fun to - it's good to laugh. E-mail: Stephanie's with us, Stephanie calling from Sedona, Arizona. But it's really the 18 to 49, 18 to 34-year-old demographic that they're really looking for.ĬONAN: Well, let's get some callers in on this conversation: 80. And you know, if other people come along, that's great. But to get young people, you have to, I take it, make the questions a little more frivolous, make them a little bit more about pop culture, what young people would presumably know, and so it's engineered in a way to get them to tune in. The advertisers want young people to watch television. FARHI: Well, not even so much the lowest common denominator, but a specific common denominator: young people. Television is in every home around the world, basically, so it doesn't have to reach higher, it can reach lower, and in fact that's exactly what has happened with quiz shows.ĬONAN: So again, going for the lowest common denominator, something television's pretty good at. So the quiz shows tried to be high-minded at the same time as the rest of the programming. And you had opera on television, you had live drama on television, you had a lot of things that to our mind these days look very intellectual and very prestigious, and so were the quiz shows. Television was trying to prove itself as a medium, it was trying to be respectable, and so it was also trying to be sort of educational. FARHI: Well, as I mentioned, it's a different era of television. And why is this happening, and who's to blame, Paul Farhi? And the questions were so obscure and so amazingly tough that people would probably turn off the television set now because they're just too hard.ĬONAN: And my producer has just informed me that I said the dumbing down of talk shows.ĬONAN. ![]() FARHI: People tuned in to watch experts, to watch these amazing brainiacs display their knowledge. The famous quiz show scandals involved the show "Twenty-One." The questions were mind-bogglingly tough, certainly in and of themselves, but also in comparison to what passes for quiz show questions these days.ĬONAN: So the idea in those days was to celebrate, I guess, people who knew a lot of stuff. In the 1950s - certainly a different television era - in the 1950s it was about the elites, about, you know, these grandiose displays of knowledge. FARHI: Well, I think they're a lot dumber, especially compared to the talk shows of the 1950s. PAUL FARHI (Reporter, Washington Post): Hi, Neal.ĬONAN: And just how dumb are today's talk shows? And I guess we're comparing them to the talk shows of the 1950s and '60s. E-mail: You could also the conversation on our blog at npr.org/blogofthenation.Īnd we begin with Paul Farhi, reporter for the Washington Post, who wrote a story called "Easy Does It: With New Quiz Shows, 'Boob Tube' Earns Its Name." And he joins us here in Studio 3A. And why is this happening? Our number is 80, 800-989-TALK. Are quiz shows getting dumber? Do you like it that way? Examples, please. But first, the dumbing down of TV quiz shows, and we need to hear from those of you playing the home version of the TALK OF THE NAME game. ![]() Later on in the program, one woman's quest for a shopping bag from every single store at the Mall of America. One of them is 74-time "Jeopardy" champion Ken Jennings, so we're going to ask him to put all of his answers in the form of a question. According to its Web site, it measures adults' lack of knowledge, which raises the question: Are quiz shows getting dumber? We're going to hear from two guests who answer that one yes. "5th Grader" proclaims itself an atypical game show. And pretty easy, right? Well, that was the $2,000 question on the premier of Fox's new hit quiz show "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader," in which grownups compete against nine, 10, 11-year-olds. We exhale what gas that plants need in order to live? Well, if you answered carbon dioxide, you're correct. I'm Neal Conan in Washington.Īnd here's a question for you.

Hold the bar with hands shoulder- width apart and knees slightly bent. In fact, you’ll provide the mechanical advantage necessary to go heavier with less risk of strain, delivering a greater growth stimulus. Done with control, you won’t take any tension off the biceps-which you would if you leaned back excessively, as most guys do. The solution is to use the power in your hips to get the bar moving. Keeping your chest up and your elbows tight to your sides, initiate the move by raising your hands slightly so you feel your biceps become engaged. When you do train up to the point of curling heavy weights, you hit a sticking point halfway up, and you may start to feel pain where the biceps tendon connects to your shoulder. How To Do A Barbell Curl (Image credit: Glen Burrows) Stand tall with your chest up and core braced, holding the barbell with your hands just outside of your hips, using an underhand grip. ![]() As they looked for the keys to American growth in the nineteenth century, these economic historians questioned whether the Civil War - with its enormous destruction and disruption of society - could have been a stimulus to industrialization. ![]() In the years after World War II, a new group of economic historians - many of them trained in economics departments - focused their energies on the explanation of economic growth and development in the United States. Harold Faulkner devoted two chapters to a discussion of the causes and consequences of the war in his 1943 textbook American Economic History (which was then in its fifth edition), claiming that “its effects upon our industrial, financial, and commercial history were profound” (1943: 340). The “Beard-Hacker Thesis” had become the most widely accepted interpretation of the economic impact of the Civil War. By the time of the Second World War, Louis Hacker could sum up Beard’s position by simply stating that the war’s “striking achievement was the triumph of industrial capitalism” (Hacker 1940: 373). Charles Beard labeled it “Second American Revolution,” claiming that “at bottom the so-called Civil War – was a social war, ending in the unquestioned establishment of a new power in the government, making vast changes – in the course of industrial development, and in the constitution inherited from the Fathers” (Beard and Beard 1927: 53). During the first half of the twentieth century, historians viewed the war as a major turning point in American economic history. The Civil War has been something of an enigma for scholars studying American history. Ransom, University of California, Riverside So long as the core ingredients of victory – Stalin’s leadership, party guidance, the Soviet system, the unwavering heroism of the Red Army and citizenry – remained in place, the myth’s articulators were free to promote a range of competing narratives, from accounts emphasizing a homogenous collection of Soviet people bound latterly in “friendship” to those stressing Russian “elder brotherhood" and ethnic diversity.Roger L. ![]() As Stalin’s toast was eliciting mixed reactions, party ideologues shaped a divergent set of postwar narratives geared toward mobilizing local populations along contrasting ideological planes. Rather, it allowed an “internationalist” paradigm to coexist with its Russocentric counterpart in discursive tension throughout the era. Far from a consistent Russocentric ideological rubric, this chapter shows that the Stalinist leadership refused to commit to an exclusively Russocentric understanding of the war. ![]() Specifically, the chapter pursues the afterlife of Stalin’s oft-cited toast to the Russian people in both Russian and non-Russian contexts to tease out its rather inconsistent and ambiguous connection to the official war narrative. This chapter explores ideological production and commemoration in the late Stalinist era through the lens of the fledgling myth of victory in World War II.

Paper soldiers4/1/2023 ![]() ![]() When he burst onto the scene alongside Jay-Z in the mid-1990s, clutching a bottle of Cristal in both hands, Dash represented a weird new archetype: the businessman as superstar. When Damon “Dame” Dash dies, his obituary will inevitably describe him as Jay-Z’s one-time business partner (unless their recent low-key reconciliation blossoms into more), but that doesn’t do justice to the strange role Dash has played in pop culture. Dash produced Shadowboxer, the first of Daniels’ unintentionally hilarious melodramas, and co-directed and produced Paper Soldiers, in addition to contributing a self-deprecating cameo as himself. The connection, I suspect, boiled down to a fascinating figure named Damon “Dame” Dash, who bridges the worlds of uptown and downtown, the arthouse and the streets. It doesn’t share any major cast or crew members with The Butler, nor are they thematically similar. But the recommendation engine suggested I might also like the 2002 comedy Paper Soldiers, and that connection was much less clear. When I started with Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Netflix’s suggestion that I might also like Magic Mike looked simple enough: Matthew McConaughey starred in Daniels’ hilarious melodrama The Paperboy the same year he starred in Magic Mike. Perhaps the Netflix recommendation robot wasn’t providing easy answers, so much as challenging me to find connections myself. ![]() Perhaps it’s not just a simple piece of technology, but rather a complicated form of artificial intelligence capable of doing deep research and making sophisticated associations that might elude lesser intellects. Now, however, I fear I’ve underestimated it. During the previous installments of this column, I viewed Netflix’s recommendation engine merely as a computer algorithm that draws clear-cut connections between projects.

Pictures of white particles in urine4/1/2023 ![]() Both mother and child were safely evacuated from the apartment with no further injuries sustained. Upon return to the living room, the piece of white phosphorus had ignited the couch which took hold and the entire apartment was gutted with fire. The patient then proceeded to put out the flames in the bathroom shower. Subsequently, she dropped the rock which made contact with her right calf and then landed on her right foot that was covered by a sock and ignited. As she commenced unwrapping the paper towel, white smoke emanated from the rock that was followed by ignition of flames and accompanied by a severe burning sensation in her hands. According to her anamnesis, the daughter presented her mother an unusual appearing, yellow translucent colored rock covered by a wet paper towel. Upon returning home, the daughter washed the rocks of sand with tap water and immediately wrapped them in a paper towel. We report a case of a white phosphorus burn that has a unique mechanism of injury involving a 40-year-old woman with her 7-year-old daughter who were collecting rocks on a beach in Tel Aviv. Here we present the case of a 40-year-old female who sustained chemical burns from contact with white phosphorus. For military personnel, materials as white phosphorus present a high risk for burns from incendiary shells and detonators and such injuries warrant the expertise of experienced military burn surgeons. Well known for its use in military warfare, white phosphorus burns displaying an illuminous yellow flame producing a thick white smoke that serves as a smokescreen, interferes with infrared cameras and weapon tracking devices. The bulk of phosphorus produced with this method is then converted to phosphoric acid that is used in agriculture for the production of fertilizers rodenticides, fireworks and doping agent for silicon in the manufacturing of semiconductors. In the dark, white phosphorus emits a greenish light and white fumes can be seen and a garlic-like odor. Due to its dehydrating action, white phosphorus is a highly corrosive substance. With a melting point of 44 ☌, white phosphorus is insoluble in water and above 30 ☌, the particles spontaneously oxidize when in contact with the atmosphere forming phosphorus pentoxide a strong desiccant and dehydrating agent. Hence the new element was named, phosphorus deriving from the Greek word phosphoros (Φωσφόρος) meaning (light bringer or bearer). As a result, the vapors created were passed through water causing the white phosphorus to become a soft, waxy, white solid material. Brand prepared a mixture of dried urine and sand by means of boiling. In 1669, a German merchant and alchemist, Hennig Brand (1630–1692) who was intent on searching for the “Philosopher’s stone”, a legendary object that could turn base metals into gold, was unintentionally preparing white phosphorus. Awareness of the unique nature of white phosphorus among military burn clinicians should be emphasized. Conclusionsĭuring peacetime, white phosphorus possess a significant danger to civilians. Despite the use of pressure garments, hypertrophic scarring began to develop on the dorsum of her right foot. The patient was discharged 22 days after admission and followed up in the outpatient clinic. The burns were treated conservatively with mafenide acetate on the medial calf and dorsum of foot and Flaminal Forte was used for the palmar region. In this report, we discuss the case of a 40 years old female who sustained 2% Total Body Surface Area partial to full thickness burns from white phosphorus. Classed as a chemical burn, white phosphorus is used for military purposes and within industry, for the manufacture of fireworks and agricultural products. White phosphorus burns are often associated with smaller surface areas and high morbidity rates. Burns from white phosphorus are rare and remain a challenge for clinicians.
